Yahoo's very own Jerry Maguire!
I read with interest a story posted by TechCrunch regarding Brad Garlinghouse's internal memo which was leaked to the Wall Street Journal. You can read it here over at Mike's site. Brad is an SVP at Yahoo who I am presuming is either frustrated beyond belief in regards to internal bureaucracy or is trying to position himself for a change. Well one way or another, changes are coming....what they are, we'll have to wait and see. After reading the memo though, I have to add that I wasn't really sure what the exact goal is. When you read comments at other blogs about this memo, you can see that half the camp believes it's simply self-promotion while others cheer Brad's openness and risk-taking. I don't know........nowadays, you really can't tell anymore what things like this are supposed to mean. But to start off, I have to say he probably watched Jerry Maguire a couple of times in order to get inspired for this rant of a memo. If he took a fish and walked out, I would have not been surprised. Still, it raises the same thoughts in my mind as it did when I saw Tom Cruise do it in that film. Can you nowadays make such a stand in a large organization and not be killed for it?
One way or another, people are all already predicting the outcome......a rolling head of some senior manager, be it Semel or Garlinghouse. Unfortunately, Brad already wrote in his memo indirectly that there are folks at the top who are not accountable for their lack of performance, yet the fact remains that these are all very well paid managers and what are the consequences of getting beheaded? Another job with the same salary and a "re-do" elsewhere? I'm curious to see how this pans out in the next couple of days/weeks. A conclusive outcome of this will only be evident once initial steps are taken. For now, it's just a leaked memo which I am sure is being digested at all levels within Yahoo! I can only presume a lot of people will soon have indigestion!
