Great Event Fred!
I just returned from two days of fundraising in London (every day is fundraising but it was fundraising "in London"). Anyway, I wanted to thank Fred from Atlas Venture for the invite to his event on Tuesday evening. It was hosted by Atlas at the Avenue on St. James Street (a place I like quite a bit having eaten there before) and was quite fun. Even better, it was well attended and I was able to meet up with a lot of people whom I haven't had the chance to talk to for a while. And finally, I got to shoot the breeze with Fred and Alexander from Atlas as well as Mark from Mangrove and a guy from Skype (sorry, did not get his business card!) Obviously, there were lots of other people whom I was able to speak with but as the evening progressed and the alcohol flowed, I am not sure I want to divulge who may have dirt on me! Plus, this is a cheap plug for Fred since I was invited by him............is this against blogging ettiquette?
One way or another, it's great to chat with someone whose blog you regularly read. It was also really interesting to get Fred's feedback on his experience blogging as there were some really interesting comments such as "I'm the most read VC blogger in Europe, but I have 300 readers". That's the one statement that really had me wondering what blogging is all about. We discussed whether one blogs to promote oneself, or to simply satisfy one's journalistic urge, or whatever. It's tough to nail down why each person does what he does, but Fred and I saw that we both have a long way to go to get readership numbers such as many U.S. VC's have who blogs. (They did have a head start of a couple of years though!)
